But has there ever beenanother such song that announced that a groups members had come to hateeach other and would be breaking up soon These two CDs are filled withthe Mamas and the Papas distinctive combination of the folk rock oftheir peers (many of whom also appear in Creeque Alley: Roger McGuinnand Barry McGuire, and the Lovin Spoonfuls Zally Yanovsky), love forpre-Beatle rock (their beautiful version of the Shirelles Dedicated tothe One I Love), and inimitable group vocals. –David Wolf

First biography paragraph from All Music (by Bruce Eder):

Theleading California-based vocal group of the 60s, the Mamas & thePapas epitomized the ethos of the mid- to late-60s pop culture: livefree, play free, and love free. Their music, built around radiantharmonies and a solid electric folk foundation, was gorgeous on its ownterms, but a major part of its appeal lay in the easygoing southernCalifornia lifestyle it endorsed. The groups success was asextraordinary as it was brief, and onlookers may well wonder what wentwrong with a performing group that seemed to have the world at its feetfor all of two years. The irony behind the Mamas & the Papas storyis that the same forces that made it possible for them to createextraordinary music together also made it impossible for them to staytogether for more than a short time.
