Why Free WordPress Themes Are Great For Improving Page Rank?

Google disclosed latest PageRanks for websites in January 2011. Though many SEO experts say that Page Rank is no longer important, it still makes sense to try improve your website or blog’s weight as decided by Google, the most popular search engine.

Page Rank is an algorithm that assigns a numerical weighting to each website for measuring its relative importance on the Internet.

When Google was founded, one key innovation was PageRank, a technology that determined the “importance” of a webpage by looking at what other pages link to it, as well as other data. Today we use more than 200 signals, including PageRank, to order websites, and we update these algorithms on a weekly basis.

In the latest update, one of my old blogs’ Page Rank improved from Page Rank 4 to Page Rank 5 even though no new content was added on the blog since May 2010.

How did it happen? It’s a known fact that search engines love new, unique content. How come the ranking of the blog improved without new content?

The secret is: free WordPress themes. When I was working actively on that blog, I had released some high-quality WordPress themes. Many of them had been included in WordPress theme round-ups by popular design blogs like Smashing Magazine and wpbag.

As the theme had a link to the blog, it has backlinks from thousands of blogs with varying level of popularity and authority. This number has been growing over time.

If you can design a WordPress theme (or even a Blogger/BlogSpot template), you should seriously consider offering them for free. Some websites or blogs also get themes designed by professionals and offer them for free on their sites. Though it’s a bit expensive proposition,  it can get you plenty of backlinks that will stay there as long as the theme is being used by other websites or blogs.

Once you have your free themes ready, you can submit them to popular themes repositories and reach out to a larger audience base. The more websites/blogs use your theme, the better.

When adding a link to your website, you should try to make use of keywords along with the name of your site as anchor text. Unless you want to rank higher for your own name, do not use your name as the anchor text.

wpbag has also released a few free WordPress themes as well as Blogger templates that have gained wide acceptance. You too can give high-quality themes for free and improve your Google Page Rank. Best of luck!
